This crater lies just 40km north-east of the Ngorongoro Crater, stands at 300 metres in height and more than six kilometres in width. Although not as well known as the Ngorongoro crater, Empakaai is rapidly becoming one of the bucket list items for clients visiting the area.
The Empakaai crater hike is an excellent way to break up a safari that is mostly experienced from a vehicle. You have a choice on whether you want a half days hike or a full day of hiking.
You will be accompanied by an official game park ranger on your hike to ensure that both you and the animals are safe. The drive to the starting point of the hike will vary depending on where you’re staying. A reasonable level of fitness is required and sturdy shoes are highly recommended. Remember to bring a hat and sunscreen too as the days can get rather hot.
The most eye catching feature of the crater is the stunning lake that covers most of the crater floor. On clear days you will also be met by the stunning view of Oldonyo Lengai – Tanzania’s most active volcano. In the distance you may also spot the snowy peak of Mt. Kilimanjaro in all its glory.
The hike begins with a 30 to 45 minute trek into the crater through dense mountainous forest. Keep an eye out for hyenas, bush bucks, water bucks, buffaloes, blue monkeys and even elephants.
A vast variety of birdlife may be seen in the forest areas as well as by the shores of the lake. Pink flamingoes and a variety of other water birds dot the shorelines creating a bright and colourful contrast to the blue waters of the lake.
